How to use this tool

  1. Open a photo and find faces automatically, or draw the areas yourself.
  2. Check the coverage, move or resize each area, and adjust its effect, strength and soft edge.
  3. Review every face and detail you want to hide, then download a new copy.

Which effect should you choose?

These original illustrations compare three common uses. They are diagrams, not photographs exported from the editor. PicMender edits still photos only.

Face · blur

BeforeAfter
Illustration of a drawn face before and after blur.
Illustration

Softens facial detail while keeping the surrounding photo. Check every face: light blur may leave someone recognizable.

Number plate · pixelation

BeforeAfter
Illustration of a sample number plate before and after pixelation.
Illustration

Breaks the selected detail into blocks. Draw a manual rectangle over the whole plate and check the exported image.

Name · solid cover

BeforeAfter
Illustration of a fictional name on a card before and after an opaque cover.
Illustration

Replaces pixels inside the selected area with an opaque colour. Useful when the letters themselves should no longer be visible.

Examples: faces, plates and private text

These examples show manually selected areas in PicMender, from a face in a photo to contact details in a screenshot.

Blur bystanders in a travel photo

Blur
Before
A travel photo can include people you did not mean to share.
After
Selected faces are blurred while the main subject and surroundings stay visible.

How to do it

  1. Mark the faces you want to blur. Four faces were selected by hand in this example.
  2. Check the whole exported photo; distant faces may still be visible.

Show an outfit without the model’s face

Blur
Before
You want to share the clothes, fit and details without showing the model’s face.
After
The face is blurred and the outfit remains visible.

How to do it

  1. Mark the face and adjust the selected area.
  2. Choose blur and check that the clothes remain clear.

Blur a child’s face in a family photo

Blur
Before
You want to share a photo with the parents visible and the child’s face hidden.
After
Only the selected child’s face is blurred; the parents and family scene remain visible.

How to do it

  1. Mark the child’s face without selecting the parents.
  2. Check the export for missed areas and other identifying details.

Cover a plate before posting a car photo

Solid cover
Before
A car-sale photo can show a readable license plate.
After
A solid cover hides the plate details while the vehicle stays visible.

How to do it

  1. Draw a rectangle over the entire plate and choose solid cover.
  2. Check that no characters are readable in the downloaded image.

Hide contact details in a screenshot

Solid cover
Before
A screenshot can include an email address and phone number.
After
Solid covers hide the contact fields while the useful message remains readable.

How to do it

  1. Mark the complete email and phone fields and choose solid cover.
  2. Check the downloaded copy for any remaining private text.

Check the downloaded image at full size before sharing. Hiding a face alone does not guarantee anonymity.

Practical example and settings

Example: To hide a face, find faces automatically or draw a rectangle or circle, then check that it covers the entire face. For a name on a document, draw a separate area and choose a solid cover.

Choose your settings: Each area has its own effect and settings. Move or resize it after selection. Blur softens detail, pixelation makes blocks and solid cover replaces the covered pixels; Soft edge fades only just outside the selected core.

If the result is unexpected: Detection can miss faces or select non-faces. Remove incorrect areas and add missing ones manually. Inspect the downloaded photo at full size, including reflections and identifying details. Blur alone does not guarantee anonymity; this tool does not process videos.

Questions about this tool

Are faces selected automatically?

Use Find faces automatically to suggest editable areas. Detection may miss profiles, small or partly covered faces, or select a non-face. Check every proposal and add or correct areas manually.

Does blur guarantee that a person cannot be recognized?

No. Missed areas, weak blur or partial coverage can leave a person recognizable. Inspect the downloaded image and use solid cover for details that need complete pixel coverage. Selection guides are not exported.

How does the soft edge work?

The selected core keeps the full chosen effect. A narrow band outside its edge gradually fades the effect back to the original image. Set Soft edge to zero for a hard boundary.

How privacy works

Good to know

File limits, export quality and local processing.

Is my image uploaded?

No. The editor reads the image you select and processes it locally in your browser. We do not receive or store your image.

Which files can I use?

Static JPG, PNG and WebP images up to 15 MB and 16 megapixels, with no side longer than 8,192 pixels. GIF, HEIC, SVG, RAW and animated images are not supported.

Will a smaller file have the same quality?

JPG and WebP compression can remove detail. Compare the prepared result before downloading. PNG export is lossless for the edited pixels, but the file can be larger than the original.

Can PicMender find faces automatically?

Yes. Use Find faces automatically to suggest areas, then check and adjust them. Detection can miss faces or select the wrong area. Manual rectangles and circles remain available, and edits are included in the downloaded image.

Does it preserve camera metadata?

The editor creates a new image from pixels; original camera metadata, colour profiles and print resolution are not retained as an editing feature. Colours and fine detail may differ from the original.
